Free Heart Checks at Berkley High School

"Student Heart Check" logo with a teal heart-shaped icon containing a dark checkmark, above a green underline.

Corewell Health Children’s Student Heart Check program is pleased to partner with Berkley School District to offer a free heart screening event for eligible students.

The screening will take place on Saturday, September 19, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Berkley High School West Gym, located at 2325 Catalpa Dr, Berkley, MI 48072. This event is open to all Berkley Schools students ages 13-18. Advance registration is required and is currently open to students who meet the age criteria.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in young athletes, and it often occurs without warning signs. While it is rare, early detection of underlying heart conditions can be lifesaving, making preventive screenings an important step in protecting student health.

Comprehensive heart screening includes:

  • Health history review and limited cardiac physical examination
  • Blood pressure check
  • Hands-only CPR and AED education
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)
  • Focused echocardiogram

You will receive the results from this screening the day of the event, including a copy of the EKG to share with your child’s physician. Your child’s physician will direct all recommended follow-up.  Please note that results and EKGs will be added to a Corewell Health medical record. This screening does not replace sports physicals, and sports physical forms cannot be signed at this event.

Registration

Corewell provided these registration categories directly to protect student privacy during the screenings. If your child doesn't fit into either one, please contact Jennifer Shea at jennifer.shea@corewellhealth.org, and she'll be happy to assist with registration.

Program Impact

To date, Student Heart Check has screened 22,578 students:

  • 2,424 students were advised to follow up with their pediatrician
  • 241 students were recommended to stop activity pending further evaluation by a cardiologist

Data collected during the screening may be used anonymously by Corewell Health researchers to further scientific understanding of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. Student privacy and confidentiality are strictly maintained.
